There are plenty of reasons why returning to school might not be at the top of your list. From certain lifestyle choices to events that were completely out of your control, the path towards getting an education and strengthening career goals is different for everyone.
Now, though, is the perfect opportunity to follow your goals and get committed to going back to school. To help with the process, we’ve outlined a few key tips to get you back into the swing of things.
Finding Your Driving Force
At Marion Technical College, we make sure that every student who enrolls has a clear, comprehensive idea of what they want to get out of their education. This means identifying and establishing the reason, or driving force, behind wanting to go back to school.
For some, this is their opportunity to start a career after earning a high school diploma, and they realize career training is a great jump start to a career. For others, their current careers may require additional education or certifications in order to advance. And still, for others, a complete career change is in order, and they need the tools necessary to facilitate that transition.
Regardless of your reasons, the process is made much easier when you have a better understanding of your personal motivations for going back to school.
Craft a Solid Plan
Once you have your motivations mapped out, the next step to consider is the time you’ll be willing to devote to your education. MTC has several “Career in a Year” options, like Practical Nursing (LPN) Program and Welding Technology, which let you work towards your career goals without having to sacrifice too much time to the process.
We also have several lengthier programs that are just as flexible to accommodate your busy life. A major key to education success at MTC is practicing good time management. Integrating this trait into your master plan can work wonders by allowing you to keep track and stay ahead of all your responsibilities in and out of the classroom.
Planners, calendars and organizational smartphone apps can all help you stay on top of things, plus they can be shared with friends and family members so they can help you stay focused on your goals.
MTC has a knowledgeable and helpful academic advising staff that’s ready to assist you along every step of your journey. Keeping the lines of communication open with them, through your success and your frustrations, will go a long way in helping you achieve success.
A Strong Support Group
Sometimes the challenges of getting an education, with everything else that may be in your plate, can be frustrating. That’s why it always helps to have a reliable support system that can guide you through all the twists and turns.
Keeping friends, family, spouses and even your employer abreast of your academic progress can strengthen you support system while giving others a point of reference in the event you get bogged down with any academic responsibilities.
Aside from your personal support group, MTC also has a collection of resources available for you to call upon. Whether you need technology help, writing and math tips, or career advising, our support services are here for your convenience.
