Culinary Training Leads to All Restaurants
The Commercial Foods and Culinary Arts Program at Marion Technical College gets you ready for all stages of the food preparation process. With our program, you’ll become familiar with a wide variety of food so wherever you’re employed you have relevant knowledge to that establishment. By and large, many food preparation workers and chefs find employment at restaurants. But, there are different types and locations to suit every interest. You can use your training in commercial foods and culinary arts to work at: fast casual restaurants, upscale restaurants, food trucks, grocery stores with an eatery, and other specialty food shops. Learning how to weigh and measure ingredients, sanitize utensils; cut meats, poultry and seafood; and store food properly with your culinary training is transferrable to any type of food establishment you want to work at.
Use Your Training in Commercial Foods and Culinary Arts Elsewhere
Another option for employment after completing your culinary program is to prepare and serve food in large quantities for nursing or residential care facilities, cruise ships or the armed forces. These locations are not your typical food eatery types, but they require the same skills while taking you to new places you may not have initially thought of. Taking the temperature for food, mixing ingredients properly, and ensuring that food is hot or cold enough for consumption are things you would’ve done for a restaurant but will also do here, along with other tasks that arise because of the specific environment. Along with knowing how to prepare cold foods, slice ingredients properly or brew coffee or tea, you’ll also need to develop leadership and communication skills to push your culinary career forward. After some experience as a food preparation worker, you can build your knowledge base to become a chef or head cook, or even a food service manager.
