Barbering

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:

The purpose of this program is to prepare students for employment as restricted barbers or barbers. Instruction is designed to qualify students for employment upon successfully passing the Florida Restricted Barber or Barber License Examination.

The program is a combination of theory, and hands-on training provided on the Marion Technical College campus. It provides technical skill proficiency, and includes competency-based applied learning that contributes to the academic knowledge, higher-order reasoning and problem-solving skills, work attitudes, general employability skills, technical skills, and occupation-specific skills, and knowledge of all aspects of barbering.

EMPLOYMENT OUTLOOK:

Employment of barbers, hairdressers, and cosmetologists is projected to grow 10 percent from 2014 to 2024, faster than the average for all occupations. The need for barbers will stem primarily from an increasing population, which lead to greater demand for basic hair care services.

SALARY RANGE:

In the state of Florida, Barbers may earn an annual salary between $18,284 and $27,664.* Nationally, Barbers may earn between $17,927 and $47,401 annually. **

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS:

• Standard career and technical program admission procedures apply.
• High school diploma—standard or GED strongly recommended.
• Interviews may be scheduled for applicants meeting criteria and deadline.

CERTIFICATE OF COMPLETION:

Students may earn a course certificate at the end of each course listed above upon successful completion of course requirements. Upon completion of all program requirements, students earn a Certificate of Completion in Barbering.

INDUSTRY CERTIFICATIONS:

Florida Department of Business & Professional Regulation issues a state of Florida Barber License to individuals passing the state examination. The cost for taking the examination is included in the program’s total fee.

APPLICATION DEADLINES:

For the August 2017 class, applications are due by April 6, 2017. However, applications will be accepted until the class fills.

All students planning to apply for the 2017 barbering program are strongly recommended to attend one of the following information sessions:

August 2017 class / Brewster Hall on MTC Campus / 6:00 P.M.

1/23/2017, 2/13/2017, 3/6/2017, and 4/10/2017
